Kali Linux 2020

What is Kali Linux 2020?

Kali Linux is a Debian-based Linux distribution aimed at advanced penetration testing and security auditing. Kali contains several hundred tools that are geared towards various information security tasks, such as penetration testing, security investigation, forensic computing, and reverse engineering. Kali Linux is developed, funded and maintained by Offensive Security, a leading company in information security training.

Kali Linux was released on March 13, 2013 as a complete rebuild of BackTrack Linux, fully complying with Debian development standards.

Over 600 penetration testing tools included: After reviewing each tool that was included in BackTrack, a large number of tools that simply didn't work or duplicated other tools that provided the same or similar functionality were removed. Details about what's included are on the Kali Tools site.

Open Source Git Tree: Kali Linux is an open source development model, the development tree is available on the official website. All the source code that enters Kali Linux is available to anyone who wants to modify or rebuild packages to meet their specific needs as well as being a totally free distribution.

FHS Compliant: Kali adheres to the File System Hierarchy Standard, which allows Linux users to easily locate binary files, media files, libraries, etc.

Support for powerful wireless devices: A regular point of conflict with Linux distributions for wireless interfaces has been supported. We have created Kali Linux to support as many wireless devices as possible, allowing it to function properly on a wide variety of hardware and make it compatible with numerous other USB and wireless devices.

Customized, patched core for injection - As penetration testers the development team often needs to perform wireless assessments so our core has the latest injection patches included.

Developed in a secure environment: The Kali Linux team is made up of a small group of individuals who are the only ones that are trustworthy to send packets and interact with repositories, all done using multiple secure protocols.

GPG signed packages and repositories: Each package in Kali Linux is signed by each individual developer who created and confirmed it and the repositories also sign the packages later.

Multilingual support: Although penetration tools tend to be written in English, we have ensured that Kali includes true multilingual support allowing more users to operate in their native language and locate the tools they need for the job.

ARMEL and ARMHF support: as ARM-based single-board systems such as Raspberry Pi and BeagleBone Black, among others, are becoming more frequent and cheaper, fully functional support for ARMEL and ARMHF systems. Kali Linux is available on a wide range of ARM devices and has ARM repositories integrated with the main distribution, so ARM tools are updated along with the rest of the distribution.

Kali Linux is specifically designed for the needs of penetration testing professionals and therefore all documentation on the Kali Linux official site assumes prior knowledge and familiarity with the Linux operating system in general. See Debería Kali Linux for more details on what makes Kali unique.
