Ruby on Rails is a free web application framework for the Ruby programming language. It is often referred to as 'Rails' or 'RoR'. It is intended to be used with the agile development methodology, which is often used by web developers because of their suitability for short and customer-oriented projects.
Ruby on Rails presents several tools designed to make common development tasks easier to use. Rails provides scaffolding that can automatically build some of the models and views necessary for a basic website. Also included is a simple ruby web server and a Rake build system. By including these common tools with the Rails system, a basic development environment is provided with all versions of the software.
Rails is also notable for its extensive use of the Prototype and Script.aculo.us JavaScript libraries for Ajax.
